BTS (방탄소년단), also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan or "Bulletproof Boy Scouts," is a seven-member South Korean boy group formed in 2010 and debuting on June 12, 2013, under Big Hit Entertainment (now Big Hit Music, a subsidiary of HYBE Corporation). The group's name signifies their desire to "block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim at adolescents like bullets." In 2017, BTS adopted the additional English backronym "Beyond The Scene," representing youth moving beyond the boundaries of their current reality. The group consists of **RM** (leader, rapper), **Jin** (vocalist), **Suga** (rapper), **J-Hope** (rapper, dancer), **Jimin** (vocalist, dancer), **V** (vocalist), and **Jungkook** (vocalist, dancer). Members RM, Suga, and J-Hope are heavily involved in writing and producing the group's music, making BTS one of the most self-produced acts in K-pop. BTS debuted with the single album *2 Cool 4 Skool* and the title track "No More Dream." Their early work addressed themes of school-age struggles, societal pressure, and mental health — setting them apart from other K-pop acts at the time. The group's breakthrough came in 2015 when "I Need U" earned them their first music show win. The *HYYH (The Most Beautiful Moment in Life)* series and *Wings* (2016) solidified their domestic dominance and growing international following. In 2018, BTS became the first Korean act to top the Billboard 200 with *Love Yourself: Tear*. The *Love Yourself* trilogy — *Her* (2017), *Tear* (2018), and *Answer* (2018) — cemented their position as global superstars. Their 2020 English-language single "Dynamite" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making BTS the first all-South Korean act to top the chart. Subsequent singles "Butter" and "Permission to Dance" also reached No. 1. BTS is the best-selling artist in South Korean history with over 40 million albums sold. They were the first K-pop act nominated for a Grammy Award, the first Asian act to win Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards, and have addressed the United Nations General Assembly on multiple occasions. The group launched the "Love Myself" campaign with UNICEF in 2017, aimed at ending violence against children and teens worldwide. Their global fan base, known as **ARMY** (Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth), is one of the largest and most dedicated in music history. BTS is estimated to contribute over $3.6 billion annually to the South Korean economy. All seven members are fulfilling their mandatory South Korean military service. Jin enlisted in December 2022, followed by J-Hope (April 2023), Suga (September 2023), and RM, V, Jimin, and Jungkook (December 2023). The group is expected to reunite for a full comeback following their discharges.
